Singing your best
Last time you sang, either with a quartet or with the chorus, did you sing and perform at your absolute best? Do you feel that your listeners were moved? Did people you respect come up to you and say, "That was wonderful!"? To be more personal, do you feel that you, personally, gave an inspiring performance?
For me, getting together to just sing a couple of songs in the corner is not enough. When I sing I want to do it well. When I stand in front of a group and sing Barbershop with a quartet or a chorus, I want the response to be -- "That was Great Singing! Can we hear more?" I want to be able to inspire my listeners to want to hear more and to do more. They should want to sing like we do!
Are you content just sing through a song…. "Hey, I think I know the words. I almost know the music. Isn't that good enough?" "I know we have moves here, and I do them when I remember." "It was Ok last week. Why can't I just do that again?"
Is it ok to just kinda sing that song? "I sing well enough for Barbershop!" "I sing well enough for my chorus!" "No one really notices/hears me when the chorus sings anyway. They just watch and listen to the front row."
Do you believe that's true? I don't!
Let's make a new pact
Every time we sing, we will sing our best. Whether standing on the risers working on SP, or sitting during rehearsal working on words and notes we will sing as well as we know how. That is all the Music Team can ask. If you are singing at your best, then it is the Music Team's job to teach you how to sing and perform better.
Let's take everything we have heard about singing correctly and apply it.
When we sing a song let's not just sing it! Sing it from our hearts! Let's sing the song with meaning. What are we singing about? What does this mean to me?
I've heard it said that each section is only as good as its weakest member and the chorus is only as good as its weakest section. Shall we work on strengthening ourselves, our section and our chorus.
